What can be done to remove the affliction and illness that have befallen me and my wife?

Affliction is a cause for multiplying reward. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked: "Who among people are most severely tested?" He replied: "The Prophets, then the righteous. Indeed, one of them would be afflicted with poverty until he found nothing but a cloak to wrap himself in. And indeed, one of them would rejoice in affliction just as one of you rejoices in prosperity." Therefore, patience and seeking reward from Allah are obligatory during affliction.
