What prayer did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, pray before the five prayers were made obligatory on the night of the Isra'?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to perform the night vigil prayer ( al-Layl) without specifying a fixed number of rak'ahs, in obedience to Allah Almighty's command: "O you who wraps himself [in garments]! Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little." (Quran 73:1-2). A group of scholars held the view that there was no obligatory prayer before the Isra' (Night Journey) except for Qiyam al-Layl. Al-Harbi mentioned that prayer was obligatory: two rak'ahs in the morning and two in the evening. In the of the Isra', it is confirmed that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed two rak'ahs in Jerusalem, and all of this was before the five daily prayers were made obligatory.
