"Customary marriage is not permissible without the permission and presence of the guardian, or the presence of his proxy. His consent via telephone is not sufficient. One should perform Istikhara (prayer for guidance) and consult people of sound judgment and virtue before marriage. It is not obligatory to inform the first wife about marrying a second. Marrying a woman who was previously married is not a defect. If marriage is not feasible, then the relationship with him must be severed."
