What is incumbent upon the father of the questioner, who performed Hajj a long time ago and is now elderly, and discovered that he only stood at Arafat and then returned to Jeddah, knowing that this Hajj was not the obligatory one?

If a man is still in his state of ihram, he must avoid the prohibitions of ihram, and he is obligated to offer a fidyah (expiation) for each prohibition he commits. If he has sexual intercourse with his wife, his Hajj is invalidated, and he must complete the invalidated Hajj, perform the Farewell Tawaf, sacrifice a sheep for not spending the night in Muzdalifah, offer a dam (blood sacrifice) for not spending the night in Mina, and a dam for not stoning the Jamarat. He is also required to perform that Hajj again as a make-up. However, if he was ignorant of the ruling regarding abandoning ihram, he is not obligated to do anything concerning the prohibitions of ihram. He should return to his state of ihram and avoid its prohibitions, then proceed to the Kaaba for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i, followed by Tawaf al-Wada'. He is obligated to offer the blood sacrifices for the واجبات (obligatory acts) he missed, but he is not required to make up the Hajj.
