What is the ruling on divorcing one's wife, who is five months pregnant, with three pronouncements of divorce at one time?

Pregnancy does not prevent divorce, according to the consensus of scholars. Divorcing a wife with a triple divorce can have several interpretations: 1. If one says "You are divorced three times" or if the divorce occurs three separate times in one session, then three divorces are binding according to the majority of scholars. 2. If one says "You are divorced, you are divorced, you are divorced": If the intention was to emphasize only the first statement, then only one divorce is binding. But if the intention was to initiate divorce with all three statements, or if there was no specific intention, then three divorces are binding. 3. If one says "You are divorced, divorced, divorced": If the intention was to emphasize only the first statement, or if there was no specific intention, then only one divorce is binding. But if the intention was to initiate divorce with all three statements, then three divorces are binding.

In the case of a triple divorce (according to the majority opinion), the wife becomes unlawful until she marries another husband willingly and he divorces her after consummating the marriage. However, if the divorce is less than three, the wife can be taken back before her waiting period ends, provided this divorce does not complete the count to three.

The view of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah is that a triple divorce pronounced in one session counts as a single divorce.
