What is the ruling on Iraqis saying when afflicted with a calamity or repeatedly encountering something loathsome: "There, God's mercy has begun to work!"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Whoever says, upon a calamity, "Allah's mercy has come," may intend that patience with it brings Allah's mercy, or that calamities expiate sins and raise ranks. The best is to say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and compensate me with something better than it," for this is the remembrance that is authentically narrated, and Allah has promised whoever says it a good compensation.
