Is it permissible for a father to refuse his daughter's marriage to a young man who is one year her senior, and to make her choose between him and another young man?

It is not permissible for the guardian to prevent a girl from marrying someone who is suitable for her if she consents to him, for Allah Almighty says: "So do not prevent them from marrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis."

Even though the father's action is impermissible, it is advised not to disobey him to avoid a prolonged estrangement. One should seek help in softening his heart through prayer and the wise counsel of family members.
