Is it permissible to ask for mercy for Christians?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
It is not permissible to supplicate for a deceased non-Muslim for forgiveness or mercy, as this contradicts the ruling of Allah Almighty and constitutes an transgression in supplication. For Allah Almighty has made the disbelievers despair of His mercy and confined it to the believers. And whoever Allah has mercy upon, He diverts the torment of Hell from him, and this great triumph is not for other than the believers. Furthermore, seeking forgiveness for non-Muslims is forbidden by the text of the Qur’an and the consensus of the scholars, and the People of the Book are included among the disbelievers.
