Aborting a fetus after ensoulment (forty days or more) is a grave sin that requires repentance, abundant seeking of forgiveness, and righteous deeds. It necessitates a ghurra (a male or female slave) or one-tenth of the mother's blood money, to be distributed among her heirs who did not participate in the abortion. The effort and hardship mentioned do not constitute a legal necessity that permits abortion.
