What is the ruling on shaving the beard or trimming part of it?

Shaving the beard is unlawful due to the clear and authentic hadiths that command its growth and fullness, and due to the general prohibition against imitating disbelievers. Ibn Hazm narrated a consensus that trimming the mustache and growing the beard is obligatory. The Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus have all affirmed the command to differ from disbelievers and the prohibition against imitating them. It was reported that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, rejected the testimony of one who plucked his beard. Imam Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said, "Shaving the beard is forbidden, and only effeminate men do it." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had a thick beard, and it is not permissible to take anything from it, based on the general proofs of prohibition.
