What is the difference between a bribe and a gratuity, and are they the same thing?

A bribe is what is given to uphold falsehood or abolish truth. If the gratuity fulfills any of these definitions, it is a bribe, and changing its name does not alter its nature. However, if it is a gift to a friend or relative, it is commendable, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Give gifts to one another, and you will love one another." But if it is money given to obtain a right that cannot be acquired otherwise, then it is unlawful for the recipient but permissible for the giver.
