What is the Maliki ruling on the niqab?

The ruling on niqab according to the Maliki school is that it is recommended (mustahabb), based on the statement of Iyad: "It is not obligatory for a woman to cover her face; rather, it is recommended and a sunnah for her." It is advisable for a Muslim woman to cover her face and hands, as many scholars hold the view that covering them is obligatory, especially in this era where tribulations (fitan) have become widespread and piety has diminished.
