What is the ruling on feeding chickens earthworms, dead or alive?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible to feed earthworms to chickens, whether alive or dead, because the majority of jurists hold that the carcass of an animal that has no flowing blood is pure, and it is that whose death in water does not render it impure. They based their reasoning on the Hadith of the fly, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that it be dipped into a drink despite its death therein. Had it rendered the water impure, he would have been commanding its spoilage. Furthermore, these worms are used to catch fish, and their sale is permissible.
