What is the response to the muezzin when he says: "Prayer is better than sleep"?
The one who hears the Adhan should repeat what the Muezzin says. So, if he says: "Prayer is better than sleep," the one responding should also say: "Prayer is better than sleep." This is the correct view, and the evidence for it is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "When you hear the Muezzin, say as he says." The only exceptions to this in the Sunnah are "Hayya 'ala as-Salah (come to prayer)" and "Hayya 'ala al-Falah (come to success)," for which one should say: "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (there is no might or power except with Allah)."
