The majority of scholars hold that the financial support for an adult son is not obligatory upon his father unless the son is incapacitated. In contrast, the Hanbalis believe it is obligatory for the father to provide support if the son is poor, having neither wealth nor income. The limit of obligatory financial support for children is the amount sufficient for basic needs according to custom and tradition. If the father spends on his children in a reasonable manner, it is not permissible to take anything from his money without his permission. However, if the son is entitled to financial support and the father does not provide the full obligatory amount, the son may take from the father's money, without his knowledge, only the amount that completes the obligatory support, without any excess.
