"Irregularity" (shudhudh) is defined as going against the majority. Among the scholars, it refers to a trustworthy narrator contradicting someone more authoritative than them. It is obligatory to adopt jurisprudential rulings that are supported by the Qur'an, , or scholarly consensus (ijma'), or those that align with the analogy () used by scholars. If a contradiction arises, it is obligatory to adopt the stronger and more preponderant evidence, regardless of whether it aligns with the majority opinion or not. A is not permitted to arbitrarily choose either of two opinions without due consideration; rather, they must act upon the more preponderant of the two.
