How can a man divest himself of shares he bought from an interest-based bank?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to buy shares of banks or usurious companies, because that involves consuming usury (riba). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who consumes usury and the one who feeds it. Whoever has bought such shares must repent and sell them. He is entitled only to his principal capital, and any excess should be spent on charitable causes. As for someone who is compelled to take the full amount, he must keep his principal capital and donate the usurious profits to good causes.
