How can a Muslim return to guidance and abandon argumentation and caprice after straying from God, and what is the meaning of the Hadith: "No people went astray after having been guided except that they were given to argumentation in religious matters"?

Relapsing from acts of obedience is due to several reasons, including: belittling the blessing of guidance, gloating over those who fall short, and weak patience. To establish the soul firmly upon obedience, one should: persist in supplicating for guidance and steadfastness, associate with the righteous, visit scholarly gatherings, cemeteries, and sick people, and manage the soul well by gradually increasing acts of obedience and avoiding boredom.

As for argumentation (jidaal), the blameworthy kind is arguing with falsehood and with a corrupt intention, which is a cause of misguidance and a punishment for it. However, arguing with truth and with the intention of upholding the truth is praiseworthy. And whoever finds in himself much argumentation should abandon it, even if he is in the right, so that he may accustom himself to guidance and action.
