The answer

The formula uttered by the husband constitutes a contingent divorce (talaq mu'allaq). According to the majority of jurists, divorce occurs upon the fulfillment of the condition it was made contingent upon, whether the husband intended divorce or merely a threat. Some jurists, however, hold that if he intended only a threat, he is only required to offer an expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yameen). The preponderant view for fatwa (legal opinion) is that of the majority. It is more prudent not to go to work to avoid the occurrence of divorce, especially if the husband provides for his wife.
