Is the questioner considered a woman in postnatal bleeding (nifas) and thus prayer is obligatory for her, or is she considered pure based on the discharge of a mucous fluid with yellowness and blood clots during her last pregnancy?

Scholars have three opinions regarding the blood discharged before childbirth: 1. Considering it part of nifas (postnatal bleeding). 2. Considering it dysfunctional bleeding (istihadah). 3. Considering it menstrual blood (hayd).

Ibn 'Uthaymeen and the Permanent Committee are of the view that nifas is blood that exits a woman after childbirth, or with it, or two or three days before it accompanied by labor pains. The woman is then considered to be in a state of nifas, so she does not pray or fast. If the period of sitting (waiting) extends beyond two or three days, then she must make up the prayers. Whereas the Shafi'is are of the view that nifas only occurs with childbirth or after it, and whatever a woman sees before childbirth—even if accompanied by labor pains—is not considered nifas.
