Is it permissible for Muslims to call themselves "Ahl al-Hadith" instead of "Muslims"?

There is no objection to designating some Muslims as "Ahl al-Sunnah" (People of the Sunnah) or "Ahl al-Hadith" (People of Hadith) to distinguish them from other sects, even though the name "Muslim" is glorious and great. However, the division among Muslims necessitated this distinction. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah showed that whoever professes the methodology of the Salaf and attributes themselves to it, this is acceptable, because the methodology of the Salaf is truth. Likewise, Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan affirmed the permissibility of being called "Salafi" if it is a reality and not merely a claim. It must be noted that the designation "Ahl al-Hadith" does not imply neglecting the Qur'an; rather, they act upon it and the Sunnah, and follow the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions. Therefore, one should be keen to adhere to Ahl al-Hadith, emulate them, and follow their methodology.
