Is the Hadith: "Marriage is the light of the eyes and the marrow of the shins" authentic, and what does it mean?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no hadith with this wording or meaning. However, some wise men have uttered similar words encouraging moderation in sexual intercourse, such as the saying: "It is the light of your eyes and the marrow of your legs." This means not to excessively engage in sexual intercourse and spoil the semen, as it is a secretion from the marrow, and frequent emission weakens a person. Semen is hot and moist, and excessive ejaculation extinguishes innate warmth, ignites alien heat, diminishes strength, weakens the stomach and liver, corrupts the blood, dries the organs, accelerates aging, harms the brain and nerves, spoils the complexion, causes tremors, and harms the chest, lungs, and kidneys.
