Is maintenance obligatory for the wife before consummation?

The wife's maintenance is obligatory upon her husband according to what is customary. Maintenance becomes obligatory when the husband takes possession of his wife, meaning when the woman makes herself available to her husband, or when she offers herself and the delay is from the husband's side, such as if he contracts her marriage but delays the consummation for a reason originating from him. Therefore, if there was an agreement that the consummation would be after one year, then maintenance is not obligatory during this year.
