ما موقف الإسلام من الضحك؟

Laughter is originally permissible, but if it exceeds the usual limit, it reaches the degree of karahah tanzihiyyah (disliked but not forbidden). The predecessors condemned it and forbade it, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Do not laugh much, for excessive laughter deadens the heart." Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: "The laughter of a believer is a heedlessness of his heart."

The blameworthy laughter is that which is accompanied by a sound, such as cackling. As for laughter that is in the form of a smile, it is praiseworthy, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Your smile in the face of your brother is charity for you." The laughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was never more than a smile.
