Following the spread of extremist groups and takfiri fatwas, and the differing understanding of jihad, which of the scholars should a Muslim follow: the Four Schools of Thought, or the Salafis who claim to be the Saved Sect, or should one adhere to the Sharia as enforced by the state?

One must obey Allah, His Messenger, and the righteous scholars. During times of tribulation, a Muslim should seek a fatwa from someone he trusts will rule according to the Shari'ah of Allah and His Messenger. He is not obligated to adhere to a specific madhhab. Obedience to rulers is restricted to what is good and permissible; it is not permissible in matters of bid'ah (innovation) or sin, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no obedience to a creature in defiance of the Creator," and "Obedience is only in what is good."
