What is the ruling on the false oath I swore to my wife that I hate my siblings, so that she would back down from her attempt to incite hatred between us, knowing that I love them?

It is not befitting for a man to be weak before his wife; rather, he should be her maintainer (qawwam) and rebuke her if she oversteps her bounds. One must repent to Allah Almighty for a false oath, and what was mentioned is not a valid legal excuse; it was possible to resort to insinuation (ta‘rid). This oath has no expiation according to the majority of scholars except sincere repentance, while the Shafi‘is said expiation is obligatory. Therefore, it is more cautious to pay the expiation for an oath to avoid the difference of opinion.
