Does divorce occur when one is in a state of extreme anger, and what is the ruling on repeating that?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars differ regarding the occurrence of divorce during extreme anger. The majority opinion is that it occurs as long as reason has not completely departed, and this is the fatwa given. As for anger that removes reason and makes one like a madman, his divorce does not occur by the agreement of scholars. So, if the husband uttered the divorce in a state of anger that removed his reason, then his divorce is null and void and not enforceable. Such matters should be referred to a Sharia judge or presented to knowledgeable scholars to verify the husband's state at the time of divorce.
