Indeed, a mujtahid (one who strives to deduce Islamic rulings) is rewarded even if he errs. The killing of Malik ibn Nuwayrah was due to his apostasy and his refusal to pay zakat, and it was not so that Khalid could marry his wife. What is circulated regarding this is a slander. He married her after she was taken captive and her waiting period had elapsed.
