Is marriage to four women permissible and allowed in the Islamic religion, and what is the meaning of the Almighty’s saying, "And you will never be able to be fair"?

It is permissible to marry up to four women, by scholarly consensus, provided there is justice between them in terms of lodging, dwelling, expenditure, and clothing. Whoever fears not being just should limit himself to one, based on the Almighty's saying: "Marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, or four; but if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one."

As for "and you will not be just," it is not in the Qur'an. Rather, it is: "And you will never be able to do perfect justice between women even if you should desire it, so do not incline completely [toward one] and leave another hanging." The intention here is emotional inclination, which a person does not control. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to divide his time justly among his wives in apparent matters, and he would say: "O Allah, this is my division concerning what I possess, so do not blame me for what You possess and I do not possess," meaning love and affection.
