To what extent is the hadith true that the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, attempted suicide?
The revelation ceased for a period after the first verses were revealed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to the extent that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, grieved intensely and almost threw himself from the mountaintops. But whenever he intended to do so, Gabriel would appear to him and reassure him. Then, the revelation continued, and the words of Allah, the Most High, were revealed: (O you wrapped in garments) down to His words: (And uncleanliness, shun it).
It is said that the wisdom behind the cessation of the revelation was to alleviate the fear the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, experienced and to make him long for the return of the revelation. It is also said that the wisdom behind it was to gradually prepare the Prophet to bear the burdens of prophethood and to patiently endure the weight of what would come to him.
And Allah knows best.
