Knowing the number of Tabi'in and the last of them to die does not entail any action or ruling. Therefore, it is advisable to inquire about what benefits one in matters of religion and worldly life. Scholars have differed in defining a Tabi'i: some believe it is someone who narrated directly from a Companion, while others consider it anyone who met a Companion. This latter definition makes it difficult to ascertain the Tabi'in, due to the indeterminate number of Companions and their wide dispersion, which prevents knowing the Tabi'in by a specific number or determining the last of them to die.
