Is it permissible to reveal a secret that one swore upon the Qur’an to keep, to a psychotherapist, if this revelation is for the purpose of psychological treatment?

It is not permissible to disclose a secret that one has been commanded to keep, or where a clue or custom indicates it should be kept confidential, whether to a psychiatrist or anyone else, even if one did not swear an oath to keep it. This is based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "Gatherings are entrusted with confidentiality," and "If a man tells another a narration and then looks around, it is a trust." Whoever discloses a forbidden secret must repent, and perform an expiation for breaking an oath if they had indeed broken one.
