Is it permissible to take money from a husband's pocket without his knowledge to buy household necessities and gifts for family?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible for the wife to take from her husband's money except with his permission, unless he refuses to give her and her children their due maintenance. In that case, she may take what is sufficient for her and her child in a reasonable manner, without excess. The proof for this is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to Hind: "Take what is sufficient for you and your child in a reasonable manner." As for taking from his money to buy gifts for her family without his permission, this is forbidden, based on his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "All of a Muslim is inviolable to another Muslim: his blood, his wealth, and his honor."
