What is the ruling on praying behind the Maqam of Ibrahim, and what are the consequences for one who abandons it due to breaking their ablution?

It is prescribed for one who circumambulates the Kaaba (performs tawaf) to pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Abraham), emulating the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Scholars have differed regarding whether these two rak'ahs are obligatory or recommended. The preponderant opinion is that they are recommended, so whoever omits them is not liable for anything. These two rak'ahs are among the Sunnah acts for which continuous succession with the tawaf is not a condition. The essence of this Sunnah is fulfilled by performing them anywhere after the tawaf.
