How can one reconcile the Hadith: "You must fast, for there is nothing equivalent to it," with the Hadith: "Show me a deed that is equivalent to Jihad," in order to determine which of the two deeds, fasting or Jihad, has nothing equivalent to it?

Various hadiths mention the best deeds, among them prayer performed on time, dutifulness to parents, striving in the path of Allah (Jihad), fasting, and a well-performed Hajj or Umrah, and Muslims being safe from one's tongue and hand. Scholars have reconciled these hadiths by explaining that the best deed varies according to the circumstances of the questioner, or according to different times and needs. Thus, the best deed for each person is what suits their situation, readiness, and ability, and what may be best at a certain time might not be best at another time.
