Who are the Ashab al-Kalam?

The "Ahl al-Kalam" (scholastic theologians) are those who rely on reason to establish creedal beliefs. They affirm what reason proves concerning the attributes of Allah and negate what it does not prove. They employ one of two methods: either discrediting the evidence if it is a weak they do not uphold, or interpreting the evidence if its authenticity is confirmed.
