Is it obligatory to fast three days every time the covenant with Allah is broken, or are the first three days sufficient, and what is the ruling when one says, "I covenant with You, my Lord, by Your granting me success, that I will not lie again," and then lies?

Fulfilling one's covenant with Allah is obligatory. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah divided covenants into two types:

1. Vow and Oath (نذر ويمين): If one covenants with Allah regarding an act of worship or obedience (e.g., refraining from lying). 2. Oath only (يمين فقط): If one covenants with Allah regarding something that is not an act of worship (e.g., not speaking to a particular person).

Since refraining from lying is an act of obedience, covenanting to refrain from lying is a vow and an oath. Violating it is forbidden and necessitates repentance and expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yamin).

The expiation for breaking an oath is: feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or emancipating a slave. If one is unable to do any of these, then fasting for three consecutive days. It is not permissible to resort to fasting if one is able to perform any of the first three options.

The expiation here does not multiply with the repetition of the act; this is because the oath is dissolved by breaking it once.

Lying is one of the major sins that must be avoided.
