Is it permissible for me to take a portion of the money given to my relative to help him with travel and job searching, given the strong probability that his family might be upset if he spends the money on something other than what they intended?
If money is given for the purpose of travel, it is not permissible to spend it on anything else or to give part of it as a gift without the permission of the giver, and any surplus must be returned. However, if money is given as a gift, donation, or charity without a specific purpose, the recipient is free to dispose of it as they wish. This is based on the intention of the giver; if the intention is specific, such as buying a turban or entering a bathhouse, the money is designated for that purpose, otherwise it is not. Based on this, it is not permissible to accept a gift from your friend while knowing the situation, and you must return the money to him and inform him of this.
