Is fasting on Mondays and Thursdays of every month considered perpetual fasting?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is a recommended Sunnah, based on the hadith: "Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I love for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting." There is no narration indicating that fasting these two days is equivalent to fasting a lifetime. Rather, it is reported that fasting three days of every month is like fasting a lifetime, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Fast three days of the month, for a good deed is multiplied tenfold, and that is like fasting a lifetime." So, fasting one day is like fasting ten days, and three days are like a month. Thus, whoever fasts these days every month is as if they have fasted the entire year.
