What is prescribed for one to whom a gift is given to say, and how should the giver respond?

It is prescribed for the one who receives a gift or a favor to reciprocate in kind or better, and to supplicate for the giver. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever gives you a gift, reciprocate it." And in another narration: "Whoever does you a favor, reciprocate it. If you cannot find anything to reciprocate with, then supplicate for him until you feel that you have reciprocated him." It is also recommended for the recipient to say to the giver: "May Allah reward you with goodness (Jazakallahu Khairan)," based on the Prophet's saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever has a favor done to him and says to the doer, 'May Allah reward you with goodness,' he has indeed expressed the utmost praise." There is no specific supplication mentioned for the one who presents the gift in return. However, there is no objection to supplicating for both of them and for the Muslims.
