What is the ruling on eating machine-slaughtered chicken – as is the practice in Islamic countries – when it is difficult to obtain halal meat in North America?

The lawful slaughter (dhakāt shar‘īyah) involves cutting the throat and esophagus of an animal over which one has control, or wounding any other part of an animal not under one's control, by a Muslim or a person of the Book. If the slaughter is performed using an electric tool operated by a Muslim or a person of the Book, it is considered a lawful slaughter.
