What is the correct explanation of the Hadith "Come, let me write for you a document after which you will not go astray," narrated by Al-Bukhari, in response to its use by people of innovation as proof of 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab's transgression against the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, with the aim of refuting their claims?

One should not pay attention to the words of those who disparage Umar and the Companions. The aforementioned narration is proof of Umar's virtue and his jurisprudence. Al-Nawawi mentioned that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to write but then left it, and that Umar's words were among the signs of his jurisprudence and his keen insight, because he feared that matters beyond their capacity might be written. Umar said: "The Book of Allah is sufficient for us," because the religion had been perfected. Al-Bayhaqi said that Umar intended to lighten the burden on the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and had what was to be written been obligatory, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would not have abandoned it.
