What is the ruling on listening to music?

Music and musical instruments are forbidden in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ conveyed narrations indicating this, among them the Hadith in Al-Bukhari: "There will be people from my Ummah who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, wine, and musical instruments as lawful." This indicates their prohibition, as the word "consider lawful" is only used for what is unlawful. Another Hadith, narrated by Al-Bayhaqi, contains a severe warning for those who drink wine while musical instruments are played over their heads: Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and He will transform some of them into apes and pigs.
