Is it permissible to perform ablution by placing the feet inside a vessel containing water after washing the face, hands, and head?
If you immerse your right foot in a vessel with the intention of performing ablution while you are in a state of ritual impurity (hadath), the water becomes used (musta'mal) for the other foot according to many scholars, and therefore, it is not permissible to use it. Others, like Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, hold the view that the water remains ritually pure (tahoor).
The more cautious approach is not to immerse the foot in the vessel, but rather to pour water over it and rub it. Rubbing (ad-dalk) is a sunnah according to the majority of jurists, and obligatory according to the well-known position of the Malikis. The fatwa adopted by us is that rubbing is a sunnah, and it is preferable not to neglect it.
