What are the rulings concerning the prayer and fasting of one who suffers from سلس الريح (incontinence of wind/flatulence), especially if eating increases gas, and must he repeat the prayer if he finds a period where gas has subsided after the prayer?
Firstly: If the person afflicted with سلس (incontinence) knows that performing prayer while sitting prevents the discharge, then he is obligated to pray sitting.
Secondly: If the person afflicted with سلس doubts whether sitting will stop the discharge, he is obligated to pray standing; because standing is an obligation in prayer and is not forfeited by doubt.
Thirdly: Whoever suffers from continuous flatulence, such that he does not find sufficient time for purification and prayer, should perform ablution for each prayer after its time has begun, and pray as many obligatory and supererogatory prayers as he wishes.
Fourthly: The person afflicted with سلس is not required to abstain from food or drink unless a specific type causes the سلس, and it can be avoided without harm. This is based on the opinion of some jurists that if سلس can be treated, it invalidates ablution.
Fifthly: If the person afflicted with سلس prayed within the time, and then the سلس ceased after the time had expired or before it, he is not required to repeat the prayer.
