Is it permissible to accept money from a lottery company, presented as a scholarship?

If the money is a pure aid and no condition is attached to it, then it is permissible to accept it. Unlawfully acquired money, if transferred through a legitimate means, can be utilized and owned. Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen mentioned that the sin of unlawfully acquired money falls upon the one who earned it, not on the one who received it through permissible means. He cited as evidence that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, bought food from a Jew and ate from the sheep gifted to him by a Jewish woman, even though Jews engage in usury. He also cited the Hadith: "It is charity for her, and for us, it is a gift from her." It must be noted that it is not permissible to reside or study in non-Muslim lands or mixed environments due to the religious prohibitions involved.
