Are all of the actions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that involve worship and for which there is no detailed explanation of a general statement, no specification of a general term, and no restriction of an absolute term, such as an action that a Companion observed and reported from him, even though the Messenger did not command it, considered among his absolute actions?
Al-Mardawi divided the actions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, into several categories:
1. Actions exclusive to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: He had many distinct characteristics, such as certain matters being obligatory upon him but not upon his Ummah, or certain things being forbidden to him. 2. Clear natural/instinctual actions (Jibiliyyah): Such as eating, drinking, and sleeping. These are considered permissible by most, as there is no intention of legislating through them. Some said they are recommended, while others said they are impermissible. 3. Actions that could be natural/instinctual or otherwise: Such as the resting pause (jalsat al-istirāḥah) in prayer and his riding during Hajj. These are considered permissible by most. Some said they are recommended, which is the most apparent and sound view, and it is the practice of Imam Ahmad and Al-Shafi'i. 4. Actions that were an explanation of his sayings: Such as his prayer, which he commanded the Ummah to emulate, and his cutting off the hand of a thief as an explanation of the verse on theft. This is agreed upon. 5. Actions that were neither exclusive, nor natural/instinctual, nor ambiguous, nor an explanation, and these are of two types: Actions whose ruling is known (obligatory, recommended, permissible): The Ummah is like him in this regard, according to most. Some said: only in matters of worship. Some held the view of suspension (tawaqquf) in such cases. Actions whose ruling is not known, and these are of two kinds: Actions intended for proximity to Allah (qurbah): Obligatory upon us and upon him, according to Ahmad and most of his companions and the Malikis. Some said: recommended (a narration from Ahmad and the choice of a group). Some said: permissible. Some said: suspend judgment until proof is established. Actions not intended for proximity to Allah: Permissible according to most. Some said: obligatory. Some said: recommended.
