What is the ruling on a wife remaining in her job as a kindergarten teacher, given the presence of male teachers, knowing that she goes out with her hijab, and that her husband travels for work and returns annually? And what is the ruling on the money she earned from this mixed-gender work?

The mere presence of men and women in one place is not considered forbidden mixing (ikhtilat). However, what is prohibited is the absence of distinction between the sexes, which could lead to temptation (fitna), or a woman appearing uncovered before non-mahram men, or her conversing with them in a manner displeasing to Allah.

If these prohibitions are absent, it is permissible for a woman to work in a school, and it is permissible for her husband to allow her, unless she stipulated working at the time of the marriage contract, in which case he may not prevent her except for a legitimate Shar'i reason.

However, if these prohibitions are present, she is not permitted to continue working, and the husband must prevent her, as he is responsible for her. Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones."

The wife must obey her husband in his prohibition, and if she refuses, she is considered disobedient (nashiz), and her matter should be dealt with according to what the Sharia has clarified.

Earnings from teaching in the presence of mixing are not prohibited, as the earnings are for knowledge, not for mixing. If the knowledge is permissible, then the earnings are halal, but she bears the sin of mixing.
