The duty towards a neighbor is to refrain from harming them, not to mistreat them, to return their greetings, and to accept obligatory invitations such as a wedding feast. It is desirable to show kindness to them through gifts, to endure their harm, and to forgive them. Al-Saffarini mentioned that the lowest degree of good companionship is to refrain from harming one's neighbor, and the highest is to endure harm from them and show kindness to them, which is the degree of the truthful (siddiqin). Ibn Hajar clarified that protecting one's neighbor is a part of the perfection of faith, and this includes extending kindness and removing causes of harm from them. One must desire good for their neighbor, advise them kindly, and pray for their guidance. Interaction with them varies according to their righteousness; the unrighteous should be admonished against evil in the best manner and their faults covered. If they do not desist, they should be shunned as a disciplinary measure, informing them of the reason.
