Is it permissible to say, "O Allah, busy us with Your obedience"?

There appears to be no impediment to supplicating with the words, "O Allah, occupy us with Your obedience," for the supplicant is asking Allah to aid him against his own self by occupying it with obedience. There is no aggression against the self in this supplication by neglecting its due rights. Acts of obedience are of many kinds, including prayer, fasting, glorification, and contemplation. In fact, seeking reward for permissible acts transforms them into acts of obedience, as was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and from Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him. Sheikh Abdur-Rahman al-Barrak has issued a fatwa (definition) permitting this supplication, stating that there is no harm in the word "occupy" (al-shughl).
